Have you ever been unsure what to do with your extra time as you approach or enjoy retirement? For many people age 50 and older, enjoying activities at home may be easy, but there are so many exciting experiences to embrace outside the home! One simply needs to know where to look. SCNOVA’s social events, for example, aim to help our beloved community members stay active and connected.
From bingo nights to workout activities, SCNOVA offers a variety of fun, useful opportunities to stay in touch with people in your neighborhood. In addition to making new friends and supporting your mental wellness, social connections are valuable building blocks for a healthy body, too.
Here are some details on the local events available through SCNOVA.
Is Staying Active Really That Important?
Once people approach the ages of 50, 60, and beyond, it is common to spend more time at home. Watching TV, relaxing with a book, and similar activities all have their place, but it is important to stay active during this time. Studies indicate that staying isolated in the home can lead to an increased risk of health challenges, such as heart disease and cognitive decline.
Similarly, one study concluded that social activity, specifically with friends or when meeting new people, is just as beneficial for health as physical activity. Are you trying to decide where to start looking for activities that interest you? Here are a few places to start.
Where to Find Local Events for 50+ Individuals
The events in your area will depend on where you live and what sorts of resources are available. SCNOVA is proud to offer numerous activities, events, meetups, and educational opportunities to help you stay active and connect with other people in the community.
In addition to SCNOVA, consider searching for meetup groups specific to hobbies or interests you enjoy. Perhaps there is a chess club at the local library or a walking group that meets at a nearby café. Visiting places such as the library, YMCA, or a community college can expose you to posters for events or meetups that catch your interest.
