Finding Free Senior Transportation in Northern Virginia

May 12, 2025 by SCNOVA

It is common for older adults to lose the capability to drive safely, whether due to a gradual loss of vision, slower reaction times, cognitive challenges, or something else. While many means of transit are available for those living in northern Virginia, there are fewer senior-specific options. Since the concern for cost is also part of the equation, senior citizen transportation can quickly become a challenge for families.

However, northern Virginia is home to numerous free senior citizen transportation services as long as families know where to look. In addition to these options, many public services offer sliding-scale fees that further broaden the possibilities. If you or a loved one needs a reliable method for getting out of the house, consider these free or low-cost senior transportation services in your area.

NV Rides

NV Rides is a network of volunteer transport options providing a singular point of contact that brings together local partner organizations that can provide travel. This network expands seniors’ access to volunteer drivers from a range of sources that families may not otherwise be aware of. Participants can schedule rides online from the comfort of their home and enjoy travel with friendly, compassionate volunteer drivers at no cost.

Shepherd’s Centers

Another volunteer program, the transportation services offered by SCNOVA (Shepherd’s Center of Northern Virginia), focus on taking seniors to almost anywhere they want to be. While one service focuses solely on transport related to medical reasons (e.g., doctor’s appointments, physical therapy), the other offers volunteers who travel with your loved one for companionship. Anything from grocery shopping to visits to the library or social gatherings is eligible for free transportation from SCNOVA.

Seniors’ Supplemental Transportation Programs

Supplemental Transportation Programs (STPs) are a good choice, depending on where your family member lives. They are more available in more populated regions and, like many other free options, are run by volunteers. The services are funded by donations and grants to provide as many vehicles and service hours as possible. Because STPs are focused specifically on senior transport, the services they provide are often more accessible, e.g., vans with wheelchair ramps.

Transit by Care Facility

If your loved one lives in a care facility, that organization may provide free transportation on its own. This service can include either scheduled visits that are often shared with others (usually for planned outings, such as grocery shopping or a social event) or single transport to medical appointments. Families should coordinate with the specific center where their loved one lives to understand what options are available.

Discounted Options

Public transit

Like anyone else, seniors can take public transit to get where they are going. In some instances, programs such as TOPS (Transportation Options Programs and Services) can help subsidize the cost of transit for seniors. Those interested in this option should acquire a transportation debit card for use on transit services.

Fastran

Fastran is a specialized transportation provider that equips older folks with the resources they need to reach their most important destinations. Typically, medical care, health care (during business hours), grocery shopping, and structured activities for those with intellectual or physical disabilities are all within the purview of Fastran. While it is not free, its fees operate on a sliding scale, which can keep it accessible even to families without a significant budget dedicated to transportation.

Taxi

Individuals who prefer fast service over low cost should consider an accessible taxi as one of their choices. While taxis may cost more than other services, they can promptly arrive when needed. However, TOPS also works with taxis, and families can specifically request a vehicle with accessible features like wheelchair devices as long as they do so at least 24 hours before the trip.

Ride Share

As with taxis, ride-share apps can provide a quick option for transportation. TOPS typically works for ride shares as well; just be sure your loved one understands how to use the service. Over time, many families enjoy building a relationship with a specific driver they trust.

Don’t Let Journeys Out of the House Disappear
