Finding Local Volunteer and Hobby Groups for the 50+ Population In North Virginia

January 12, 2026 by SCNOVA

senior woman playing ludo with friends at table in nursing homeNorthern Virginia is a diverse region with individuals interested in art and music, fishing, writing, gardening, and more. As people age, continuing to engage with their interests and stay connected with others around them becomes increasingly important. However, the cohort aged 50 and above might start to feel unsure about where to look for like-minded neighbors. The good news is that NOVA is home to many local volunteer and hobby groups that keep our beloved community members connected, active, and enriched.

Whether you choose to serve others by volunteering or participate in a shared interest with others, you will reap many benefits. Studies show that people who remain connected and engaged with their community through social activities live longer!

Here are some hobby groups and volunteer opportunities in the NOVA area to get you started on your search.

Volunteer and Hobby Groups in Northern Virginia

Northern Virginia can be a great fit for just about anyone. Some of the most accessible volunteer and hobby options to fit into your lifestyle and interests include:

Friendly Connections at SCNOVA

The Shepherd’s Center partners with the community and for the community in many significant ways, and its Friendly Connection program is one of them. Volunteers can visit in person or by phone to have meaningful conversations with others in the community. If you would enjoy having a nice chat and making new friends, consider volunteering as a participant in the Friendly Connections program!

SCNOVA’s Health and Wellness Classes

On the hobby group side of things, those interested in supporting their physical well-being can join numerous health and wellness classes at SCNOVA. As our older neighbors age, engaging in enjoyable physical activities becomes increasingly important. For many, the regular movement kindles a joy in exercise that becomes a hobby!

SCNOVA offers two types of classes: Active Aging Wellness and tai chi. AAW focuses on balance and strength to help prevent dangerous falls, while tai chi works on strength and flexibility through slow, controlled movement.

Volunteer Opportunities at Home

If you are an older adult who does not feel comfortable or able to leave your home for extended periods, this does not mean you cannot still volunteer and be a positive force in your community! In addition to options such as Friendly Connections, consider local initiatives.

During the holidays, some locations provide activities such as allowing children to write to Santa, and they need someone to write back! Consider offering tutoring to local students in an area of your expertise, knitting items for a local charity, and more!

Making Friends and Finding Shared Hobbies

Happy Seniors Engaging in A Community EventIn order to make the most of your hobby, you probably want some friends to share it with. SCNOVA and senior centers are useful places to meet like-minded people who share your interests and passions. Once you know someone else who shares your hobbies, you may discover group meetups you never knew existed.

Creating Your Own Meetups

Sometimes, your hobby just hasn’t found its footing in your community yet. Whether on your own or with friends, consider making your own hobby group! If volunteering is more to your liking, consider asking nearby charities what would help them most, then gather your friends for a good meal and time spent together while you serve that cause.

Enrich the Community and Yourself with NOVA Volunteering and Hobby Groups

Volunteering is a regular part of many of our older neighbors’ regular schedules here in NOVA, and it is always wonderful to see hobby groups coming together to celebrate the interests they love most. If you would like to explore the opportunities that SCNOVA offers, get in touch!
