Are you seeking a life-affirming way to share your time and talents?

Our incredible team of volunteers donate over 10,000 hours each year, providing valuable assistance to seniors in our community. The unique approach employed by the Shepherd’s Center allows for adults to volunteer their time providing vital services to those vulnerable seniors needing assistance. The incredible array of programs and services we provide are made possible through the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers, who are the very heart of our organization.

Volunteer Spotlight

At SCNOVA, we’re proud of the work our volunteers do. We wanted to highlight the work they do and also give them a chance to share what it means to them to volunteer for those in need.

Photo of a SCNOVA volunteer named Charles Choi

On the parable of the Good Samaritan: “I imagine that the first question the priest and Levite asked was, If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me? But by the very nature of his concern, the good Samaritan reversed the question, If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

“Dr. King’s sermon on the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) made me think about the cost to someone if I don’t help them. This is the reason why I volunteer at the Shepherd’s Center of Northern Virginia. I also remember those nameless people who helped my own elderly mother in New York City when she was in need. I am truly grateful for their unselfish assistance. I just wanted to do the same for someone else.

I enjoy giving rides or assisting with simple household tasks because I truly enjoy getting to know the people I serve and also knowing that I can be of some assistance to them.”

-Charles Choi, SCNOVA Volunteer

Giving Tuesday 2025

Support SCNOVA This December 2

Giving Tuesday is December 2, 2025. Your support will make a powerful difference in the lives of older adults who rely on SCNOVA for free transportation to doctors’ appointments, grocery stores, banks, and other essential destinations. Through these programs, many isolated older adults can participate in community events, attend social lunches, and make new friends. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps enrich the lives of our neighbors and ensures that no older adult feels alone.
